NYIT seeks a Systems Engineer, to be located at the Old Westbury campus.  The position can be considered for a hybrid/remote position with flexibility of working remotely and in our NYC or Old Westbury offices as in line with New York Tech remote work policy.

 

The Systems Engineer is a trusted resource who will work collaboratively with NYIT’s IT infrastructure and Information Security team to design, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain NYIT’s systems infrastructure ensuring the availability of production and test systems. The  Systems Engineer serves as a senior technical resource responsible for managing complex server environments, authentication systems, Microsoft 365 services, automation platforms, and research computing infrastructure while providing advanced technical support for faculty, staff, students, and administrative departments. This position will contribute to the efforts of safeguarding the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the enterprise infrastructure across the university. The incumbent will be required to participate in Systems related workgroups, to cross train members of the systems team and develop support runbooks.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring stability, security, availability, and performance of institutional technology systems that support the University's academic, research, and administrative missions.

Responsibilities

  • Administer/Manage the existing Microsoft, Linux, VDI, Backup, Cloud and Systems Infrastructure, provide suggestions on continuous improvements and iterations.
  • Administer/Manage Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization infrastructure, including deployment, configuration, performance monitoring, lifecycle management, and patching.
  • Administer/Manage and maintain Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID identity platforms.
  • Administer/Manage Microsoft 365 environment including Exchange Online, Teams, ands SharePoint.
  • Administer/Manage Linux-based systems supporting High-Performance Computing (HPC) and research initiatives.
  • Monitor and improve the lifecycle of services from inception and design, through deployment, operation and refinement.
  • Provide hands-on development and oversight of the software development lifecycle of the automation tools used by the IT infrastructure team.
  • Assists in performing hardware implementations, ensure configuration, process, and procedural standards are followed.
  • Support print management infrastructure, including PaperCut print services.
  • Direct the automation and orchestration of workloads across on-prem and cloud providers.
  • Collaborate with Information Technology team members to develop secure system automation and monitoring systems.
  • Assist in Incident response and information security investigations.
  • Provide second and third level support for troubleshooting of systems infrastructure and performance issues.
  • Research, analyze, and recommend changes for future system growth by utilizing industry standard monitoring and research tools for core infrastructure solutions.
  • Assist in the design, implementation and maintenance of NYIT’s storage and backup solution.
  • Maintain a patching credence for all systems.
  • Mentor colleagues and staff members in usage and administration of existing and new cloud and infrastructure technologies.
  • Development of configuration, process, and procedure standards.
  • Create, maintain and enforce SLAs.

Qualifications

  • BS in computer science, engineering, or other technical discipline. Experience in a higher education environment is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 recent years’ systems engineering experience including management and technology experience with enterprise-level systems, cloud-based services, and endpoint infrastructure support; experience providing IT support in an academic environment preferred.
  • UNIX/Linux/Microsoft on-prem and cloud system administration experience required, applicable industry certification(s) are desired.
  • Experience with High-Performance Computing and Linux Administration.
  • Windows system administration experience, including Active Directory, Office365 and TEAMS is desired.
  • Hands-on experience with UNIX/Linux/Windows system and program installation, compilation and configuration as well as enterprise endpoint management tools such as SCCM and JAMF.
  • Working knowledge of databases, SQL and the application of continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment solutions.
  • Proficient with concepts of a wide range of tools and technologies in Infrastructure management, deployment and development.
  • Experience with at least one scripting language, such as Python, Perl, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Functional knowledge of standards-based networking applications.
  • Functional knowledge of account management processes, directory and authentication services (LDAP), as well as DNS, DHCP, HTTP, NFS, SAMBA, CAS, ADFS, SAML, etc.
  • Demonstrated passion for problem solving; strong project management skills and the proven ability to build trust and work well with all levels of management and technical staff are required.
  • Able to communicate effectively with people at varying levels of technical fluency including the ability to explain and document complex technical issues in a way that non-technical and/or inexperienced people may understand; the ability to establish collaborative working relationships at all contact levels of the University; the ability to communicate progress/challenges to appropriate personnel effectively.
  • Must possess strong analytical skills as well as active listening skills and a high degree of integrity relative to computer security and confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to work concurrently on multiple tasks and projects.
  • Team player with excellent consulting skills and a fun, but professional presence required.
  • Excellent customer service skills; a high degree of integrity relative to data security and confidentiality of information required.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends on an as-needed basis is required.
