The Director of Application Development and Support is a hands-on role that is responsible for the construction, execution, support, documentation and oversight of activities related to the design, development, and implementation of NYIT’s enterprise business applications (custom built and 3rd party/SaaS solutions). This individual will apply proven communication skills, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of industry best practices to guide his/her application development and support team on issues related to the research, design, development, and deployment of secure application solutions by analyzing and validating business requirements for new and changing administrative processes, reporting/BI needs, and information systems.    

Responsibilities

 

  • Provide technical leadership and functional support for all of New York Tech’s enterprise applications; implement/support enterprise system integrations and application development work; provide expert advice and hands-on assistance to analysts/programmers for integration and custom application development efforts.
  • Lead the development and support of new/existing applications, ensuring that projects match business needs and requirements; ensure secure and systematic coding practices are employed, identify and resolve systems issues, conduct pre- and post-testing of systems and make proper modifications.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for new capability requests; research and make recommendations on products and services to facilitate build/buy cost/benefit decisions.
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of how New York Tech’s application ecosystem – enterprise applications, data interfaces and core business processes - interact with one another and the end user experience.
  • Review new software features and other changes related to application support and development efforts; support technical staff in the resolution of issues relevant to application performance/stability, end-to-end transactional flows, root cause analysis and corrective actions for any outages.
  • Work closely with business units and other departments within the IT organization to understand business/academic demands and identify appropriate opportunities for solutions and continued innovation of technical capabilities aligning with articulated needs.
  • Review documentation developed by other departments to ensure adherence to standards and consistency of information to analysts and developers; modify documentation and training materials as necessary.  
  • Effectively collaborate with external resources such as consultants and vendors on new/existing technology implementations, including upgrades, patches, integrations with external business applications, enhancements to existing application modules, and new software implementations, making certain existing systems are kept current.
  • Use coaching, mentorship, skill development, and recognition to build and sustain high-performing teams and strong employee engagement; define, implement and promote processes, best practices and standards for application development and deployment including service-oriented architecture, reusable code, web usability, look & feel branding and security controls.
  • Develop and/or participate in various training seminars, workshops and short courses; develop supporting documentation as needed.
  • Special projects and other duties as needed by the department and defined by the supervisor.

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline plus at least 5 years of relevant experience required. An advanced degree in a technical discipline, and relevant certifications, such as Oracle or SQL Server Certified is preferred. Comparable success and work experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree requirements.
  • Experience managing IT teams involved in development, production support and maintenance of software systems required.
  • Experience in higher education including demonstrated knowledge of higher education organization structure and business practices and the associated systems and platforms (student information systems, finance/HCM, academic advising, student recruitment) preferred.
  • Demonstrated domain knowledge in at least one of the following areas, and working knowledge in the others:
    • Full stack development (e.g. PHP, JavaScript, SQL, JSON, C#, C++, etc.)
    • IT system integrations and real-time communication (e.g. Restful APIs, web services, etc.)
    • Cloud-based Finance/HCM solutions (e.g., Oracle eCloud, Workday)
  • Understanding of secure code development/control, versioning, and data security best practices for balancing availability with security concerns.
  • Technical knowledge of various platforms to ensure applications and infrastructure stacks are current and supported.
  • Experience monitoring, coordinating, planning and executing upgrades/migrations of systems and technology.
  • Demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills necessary to manage complex and concurrent system development/implementation projects; develop objectives & requirements, assign tasks to team members, etc.
  • Proven technical competency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to communicate effectively with people at varying levels of digital and data fluency, and the ability to establish collaborative working relationships at all contact levels of the University is required.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and to lead a team; ability to set priorities and work concurrently on multiple tasks and projects; ability to communicate progress/problems to appropriate personnel effectively.
  • High level of energy and personal drive; acts with a sense of urgency.
  • Team player with excellent consulting skills and a fun, but professional presence required.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a high degree of integrity relative to computer security and confidentiality of information required.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends on an as-needed basis is required (infrequent).
