The School of Architecture and Design at New York Tech (NYIT) invites applications for the position of Technical Support Specialist located at the Long Island (Old Westbury, NY) campus.

 

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Director, Digital Technologies and Fabrication this position will support labs in the School of Architecture & Design and Digital Art and Design programs. The position will promote lab services, conduct workshops, train students, student employees, and faculty on equipment use related to VR/AR, 3D printing, laser cutting, drawing tablets, and various 3d modeling and rendering software.  
  • Collaborate with NYIT faculty and administrators and assist in, installing, maintaining, and continually improving equipment for a state-of-the-art visualization and digital fabrication lab.
  • Administration of safety procedures and their coordination with other NYIT administration: including the implementation of Operating Procedures (OP) and Machine Safety Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Assists with technology budgets and reports in addition to lab policies, procedures, tutorials, and purchases.
  • Train and supervise student staff in the interest of advancing a culture of experimental making.
  • Organize software & hardware updates in the labs as needed.
  • Manage online production queues of student 3D printing and Laser cutting submissions.
  • Organize equipment use demonstrations and orientations for students and faculty.
  • Create clear, accurate, user-friendly documentation/tutorials for all equipment.
  • Responsible for checking out and maintaining lab equipment inventory.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs issues related to equipment and software and involves the Director and IT when necessary.

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Architecture, or related field and 1-3 years’ experience in an academic and/or professional setting. Preferred fields include: Computer graphics, computer science, Digital Design, Animation, & Motion Graphics.
  • Experience operating three or more of the following digital fabrication systems: Wacom tablets, oculus, 3D printing, laser cutting, and digital cameras.
  • Experience using, installing, and maintaining software for 3D modeling (Maya & Rhino), Adobe Suite, Unity, unreal Engine, Substance Painter, & Wacom Desktop Center.
  • Experience with managing budgets, and inventory systems.  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be flexible to travel between campus locations in Manhattan and Long Island if needed to assist on specific projects, receive training or install equipment.
  • Flexible schedule with ability to work nights and weekends.
  • Ability to assist students working in an interdisciplinary manner from concept to final product.
