The Director of Business Analytics and Data Management (BA/DM) is a hands-on role that is responsible for the construction, support, documentation and oversight of activities related to the design, development, and implementation of NYIT’s business analytics and data management ecosystem, including contemporary data integration and data management strategies. The successful individual will apply proven communication skills, problem-solving capabilities, and knowledge of industry best practices to guide and support the team; and to collaborate across the organization to conceive and implement innovative solutions to satisfy various business challenges and objectives.

Responsibilities

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, build, expand and operate New York Tech’s data management, integration and BI platforms and solutions.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for BI/reporting software and/or data system/integration products; manage and lead build vs. buy decisions, proof of concepts, software selection, and infrastructure build outs ahead of actual development and system integration.
  • Oversee and complete migration of the on-premise data warehouse and BI toolset to a scalable cloud-based model, managing data access and data governance across all users, and providing expertise and support in data visualization and self-service access.
  • Develop and maintain a robust data architecture for big data, transactional data and master data to support both data exploration and analytics.
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of how New York Tech’s data ecosystem – the enterprise applications, databases, data interfaces and core business processes - interact with one another and the end user experience.
  • Work with supervisor and other senior IT staff to define data standards and models for operational data stores, data marts and data warehousing; develop conceptual, logical and physical data models to meet requirements and strategies; assist with the development of models across New York Tech to ensure adherence to sound data management principles.
  • Partners across the enterprise to expand the data platform to be the single source for all enterprise reporting, operational analysis, and advanced analytics.
  • Proactively coordinate with other departments (internal and external to IT) to ensure clear communication of enterprise design/development approaches, workflow and data standards, and reporting/BI requirements; review documentation developed by other departments to ensure adherence to data standards and consistency of information to analysts and developers; modify documentation and training materials as necessary.  
  • Use coaching, mentorship, skill development, and recognition to build and sustain high-performing teams and strong employee engagement. Directs team in the areas of planning, prioritizing, technical decisions, data integrity issues, best practices and standards.
  • Develop and/or participate in various training seminars, workshops and short courses; develop supporting documentation as needed.
  • Special projects and other duties as needed by the department and defined by the supervisor.

Qualifications

 

 

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline plus 5 years of relevant experience required. An advanced degree in a technical discipline, and relevant certifications, Data Analytics, Business Intelligence or Data Science preferred. Comparable success and work experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree requirements. Preference will be given to candidates that have experience as an architect or lead in analytics leveraging structured and non-structured data required.
  • Supervisory experience required
  • Experience in higher education including demonstrated knowledge of higher education organization structure and business practices and the associated systems and platforms (student information systems, finance/HCM, academic advising, student recruitment) preferred.
  • Demonstrated domain knowledge in at least one of the following areas, and working knowledge in the others:
    • Database visualization tools such as Microsoft PowerBI, Tableau or Qlik required; Tableau preferred.
    • Strong skills in Business Intelligence (BI), ETL/ELT, data modeling, data warehousing
    • IT system integrations and real-time communication (e.g. Restful APIs, web services etc.)
  • Technical knowledge of various data integration platforms to ensure applications and infrastructure stacks are current, supported, and strategic.
  • Experience coordinating, planning and organizing upgrades of systems and technology.
  • Demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills necessary to plan elements of development and/or implementation project, develop objectives & requirements, assign tasks to team members, and manage large- and small-scale development projects.
  • Experience managing complex technology development projects across multiple technology stacks;
  • Proven technical competency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to communicate effectively with people at varying levels of digital and data fluency, and the ability to establish collaborative working relationships at all contact levels of the University is required.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and to lead a team; ability to set priorities and work concurrently on multiple tasks and projects; ability to communicate progress/problems to appropriate personnel effectively.
  • Team player with excellent consulting skills and a fun, but professional presence required.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a high degree of integrity relative to computer security and confidentiality of information required.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends on an as-needed basis is required (infrequent).
