    New York Tech’s Long Island campus seeks a Mechanic A (Automotive Mechanic) to diagnosis and correct the causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation assigned by Facilities Operations management and the Local 282 General Foreman.  The Automotive Mechanic will overhaul, adjust and repair fuel engines, clutches, transmissions/differentials, ignition wiring, lighting, fuel cooling, braking and hydraulics.




    • Perform skilled mechanical work in automotive, bus and grounds maintenance repair shops.
    • Repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel powered self-propelled and operator-propelled motor-driven equipment.
    • Perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled vehicles, construction and other equipment used in the field.  
    • May perform NY State vehicle inspections as per NY State DMV regulations.
    • Visually examine the equipment and if needed may operate equipment to determine the nature and extent of the damage and get a description of symptoms associated with the malfunction.  
    • Use appropriate diagnostic and test equipment, observation and experience, to diagnose the cause of faults whether mechanical or electrical. 
    • Repair malfunctions on all types of automotive and industrial equipment.  
    • Use, for repair purposes, all types of testing equipment, including engine analyzers, electrical system testers, and various hand and power tools used to repair of trucks, buses, cars, construction and ground equipment used for maintenance.  
    • Repair and change all sizes of automobile and equipment tires.
    • Repair, service, both manual and automatic transmissions.
    • Repair and/or replace, but not limited to, major vehicle components such as engines, transmissions, transfer cases and axle assemblies.
    • May make repairs using electric and gas welding equipment.
    • Repair and install new vehicle accessories.  
    • Perform preventive maintenance inspections on vehicles and equipment, as required by manufacturer or policy, to ensure a safe and trouble-free day-to-day operation. 
    • May supervise and instruct others in maintenance and repair of trucks, buses, cars, construction and grounds maintenance equipment.
    • Perform repairs needed on small trucks and construction equipment such as street sweepers, small backhoes, and front-end loaders.  
    • Assist with emergency snow removal operations.
    • May drive and operate other types of motor vehicles.
    • Complete necessary paper work in order to document all repairs and preventative maintenance tasks performed. 
    • Test-drive University owned vehicles.  
    • Required to perform other grounds-related functions, including snow plowing, shoveling, distributing salt and removing snow/ice.
    • Other duties as assigned.  



    Minimum Requirements:

    • At least three (3) years of professional automotive, fleet and/or grounds equipment maintenance experience required.
    • Must be able to lift or move medium to heavy objects, and have the ability to stand, stoop, bend and stretch for long periods.
    • Must hold a valid New York State driver’s license and have a motor vehicle record, which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
    • Ability to carry out written and verbal instructions.
    • Read and interpret technical maintenance manuals, circuit, diagrams, and blueprints.   
    • Adhere to safety standards and practices established by the University safety procedures. 
    • Experienced in computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) in order to manage repairs, work assignments, vehicle tracking, parts distribution and workloads.
    • Ability to adequately order, track and manage fleet parts inventory and fueling.
    • Required to be available to work scheduled and unscheduled regular and overtime to perform other grounds-related functions, including snow plowing, shoveling and removing snow/ice.

    Preferred Requirements:

    • Knowledge of operation and use of gasoline, diesel and liquid propane gas fuel systems.
    • Hold an inspection license as a Certified Motor Vehicle Inspector. Towing endorsement preferred.
    • Computer literacy required. Ability to use a work order and/or ticketing system.
