The School of Architecture and Design at New York Institute of Technology invites outstanding candidates for the inaugural IDC Foundation Endowed Chair. This position will significantly contribute to amplify the reputation of NYIT and the SoAD by attracting world-class individuals, advancing design research and ultimately, enriching the academic environment with new knowledge. The Endowed Chair will build high-impact scholarship, promote graduate programs and advance entrepreneurship, innovation and a progressive design culture.

This position will be based in our New York City and Long Island campuses and includes some teaching at the graduate level in our Master’s programs. We are seeking to infuse our design curricula and research trajectories with critical and innovative perspectives crucial to design thinking, contemporary theory and the advancement of technologies in design practices.

We seek a distinguished candidate with a world-class academic and/or professional reputation and highly recognized accomplishments, committed to the expansion of our national and international network of partners, with a solid interdisciplinary design agenda.

The ideal candidate should have an entrepreneurial mindset, exceptional communication and organizational skills, the ability to develop transformative opportunities and build teams to execute projects and implement proposals, and support the aspirations for the School with innovative ideas for growth and visibility. This is a full-time 12 month role reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Architecture and Design.

This distinguished position will be the vehicle for the development and implementation of graduate academic degrees and research programs, will be engaged in innovative teaching and learning opportunities, and creative expressions of architecture and design. The Endowed Chair will facilitate opportunities for collaborative efforts among the SoAD and other NYIT units with a focus on generating interdisciplinary research and approaches in multiple design fields.  Areas of emphasis include the advancement of computational technologies, material explorations and fabrication processes, as well as the support and involvement of faculty and students in unconventional design research and projects.

An Endowed Chair is instrumental, for any higher education institution, in raising the bar and needs to focus on quality outcomes that leverage national ranking and international prestige. It will be the propelling force for innovation in the SoAD. Following the broader goals, SoAD is moving beyond boundaries of architectural research, to engage in a redesigned vision and promote alternative design solutions that will transform current practices in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction fields (AEC) towards a healthier built environment. Intersecting NYIT architecture, design, engineering and medical disciplines, we aspire to investigate issues for a better life in a more sustainable world embracing a holistic approach to well-being.

Candidate responsibilities will include development of internally and externally funded research programs, participation in school’s activities, and some graduate teaching. Essential will be the contribution to programs’ implementation, mentoring and facilitation of student and faculty research, participation in  student and faculty retention and recruitment initiatives, and in service activities to the community, the SoAD, and the Institution.

Critical will be an evolving research and professional agenda with definition of future aspirations and supported by national and international recognitions and accomplishments.  The candidate will be expected to have an active role in the development of cross-disciplinary projects and programs leading to the expansion of collaborations and partnerships with other universities, with the private sector, with non-profit and other community based entities, with the profession and the industry, nationally and internationally, contributing to NYIT’s excellence and to the enhancement of NYIT’s reputation.

    • A professional Master’s degree in Architecture (M.Arch or international equivalent) plus professional license (license in progress will be accepted), or Master’s in a relevant design related field, or Ph.D.
