    The Academic Health Care Center is an ambulatory health care teaching institution under the auspices of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) in Old Westbury, New York. The NYITCOM ambulatory health system is comprised of two health centers, one in Old Westbury (Academic Health Care Center) and one in Central Islip, NY (Family Health Care Center).

     

    The function of the academic health centers is to provide primary medical care and specialty services to students, staff, faculty, and the general public.  As part of the medical school, the health centers serve a major role as a vehicle for medical students to gain exposure to delivering medical care at an outpatient site. The variety of clinical specialties in which students can learn include family and sports medicine, osteopathic manipulative medicine, pediatrics, neurology, behavioral health and internal medicine. In addition to medical care the health centers also operate a rehabilitation center which includes physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy.  

    Responsibilities

    • Plans, organizes, and oversees clinical staff (nurses and medical assistants) in an Academic Health Center to provide patient care; evaluates care; oversees the department’s daily staffing requirements; orients clinical staff nursing to their job responsibilities; provides leadership in clinical problem solving. Coordinates and monitors nursing schedule.
    • Ensures department activities and records are in adherence to various licensing and regulatory requirements; maintains clinical skill and knowledge necessary to set standard and work in clinical areas of nursing; assists with patients examinations and/or questions.
    • Develop and maintain nursing protocols for the delivery of quality patient care.
    • Implements and interprets organizational policies and procedures, and nursing standards and regulations
    • Assists with staff recruitment; ensures an orientation plan for new clinical staff members, and provides timely feedback; evaluates and schedules in-services/training as needed; serves as liaison with physicians
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

     

    • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing required
    • Master’s Degree in nursing preferred
    • Supervisory experience required
    • BLS Certification
    • New York state RN licensure
    • Minimum of seven (7) years of clinical experience; Knowledge of health care and medical procedures, including terminology
    • Interpersonal/human relations skills; Attentiveness to detail; Supervisory skills
    • Ability to prioritize duties and delegate responsibilities
    • Ability to use protective equipment and respond to emergency situations
    • Ability to exert average physical effort
